The Tourism Promotions Board (TPB) recently conducted a comprehensive workshop focused on applying Gender Analysis and the Harmonized Gender and Development Guidelines (HGDG) in Development Planning and Implementation. Held on June 2nd and 3rd, 2025, the event aimed to enhance the gender-responsiveness of TPB programs.
Day 1 Highlights:
The workshop commenced with an opening session and introduction of resource speaker, Mr. Raymond Jay Mazo. Participants engaged in an "Expectation Check" to express their hopes for the training. Mr. Mazo assured a safe space and promised a training report. A key segment focused on gender analysis, explaining its importance in identifying and addressing gender inequalities. Concepts like Problem Tree Analysis and Solution Tree Analysis were discussed, along with the use of Longwe’s Women Empowerment Framework and the critical role of sex-disaggregated data. The day concluded with a workshop where groups analyzed a case study and presented their findings, followed by a brief discussion on Harmonized Gender and Development Guidelines (HGDG) and Project Implementation, Management, Monitoring, and Evaluation (PIMME).
Day 2 Highlights:
Day two began with a workshop on scoring TPB projects using the Generic GAD Checklist and conducting an HGDG Assessment. Participants reviewed project documents, scored them against the checklist, and identified areas for improvement and related gender issues. Recommendations included enhancing documentation, improving Project Brief Forms (PBF), and finalizing project design before PBF approval. A session on the PIMME checklist followed, emphasizing its role in assessing gender-responsiveness. Another workshop involved scoring terminal reports using the PIMME checklist, leading to presentations demonstrating improved understanding of GAD checklists. The workshop concluded with participants sharing their experiences and committing to share additional GAD checklists.
This workshop significantly enhanced the TPB's capacity to develop gender-responsive programs using Gender Analysis and HGDG tools, ensuring future initiatives are inclusive and equitable for women in tourism. Continuous monitoring and evaluation will be crucial to track progress and further refine gender mainstreaming efforts.
